First and second years of study at INSA-Rouen in the STPI department consist of : :

• A three-semester common core syllabus ;
• A fourth semester offering a wide variety of electives, before students enter a department of specialization.

In these two years, students :

• acquire a solid background in science and technology ;
• become capable of reasoning in a rigorous scientific manner ;
• develop the personal and interpersonal skills vital for their future careers, thanks to courses provided by the Humanities Department : foreign languages and cultures, communication, an introduction to engineering professions, electives in performing and visual arts, as well as regular physical training, individual and team sports activities ;
• become autonomous and responsible engineering students, able to work alone and on a team.

By the end of these two years, students will have gained broad-based scientific know-how needed to :

• follow successfully the curriculum of any of the six INSA departments of specialization ;
• adapt quickly to change later in their careers, whatever their initial specialization.
